Psychedelics Research and Psilocybin Therapy

The Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research

The Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research is leading the way in exploring innovative treatments using psilocybin. The molecular structure of psilocybin, a naturally occurring psychedelic compound found in 'magic mushrooms,' allows it to penetrate the central nervous system and the scientific and medical experts are just beginning to understand its effects on the brain and mind and its potential as therapeutics for mental illnesses.**

UC Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics (BCSP)

On June 11, Michael Silver, faculty director of the UC Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics (BCSP), announced the launch of a new study exploring how psilocybin alters human perception—the first human subjects neuroscience research project to be supported by the BCSP.

“We have this incredible opportunity to characterize the psychedelic experience in real-time — while it’s happening — using modern neuroimaging methods,” Silver told Berkeley News. “Understanding the actions of psychedelics at a neuroscientific level will generate insights into how they’re working as medicines and will hopefully help us develop more effective treatments for mental health disorders. It will also shed light on some of the fundamental mysteries of the human brain, mind, and consciousness and how they relate to each other.”

This study in the Silver laboratory and the BCSP is a landmark for UC Berkeley’s campus – the first research involving human subjects ingesting a Schedule I controlled substance.

After ingesting psilocybin, study participants will complete simple tasks, like reporting their visual perceptions while viewing ambiguous images, while researchers measure activity in their visual cortex using functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI. ***
